Bay Area Aging Meeting (BAAM)

November 9

The Bay Area Aging Meeting (BAAM) was founded by Eric Verdin (then at the Gladstone Institutes), Pankaj Kapahi of the Buck Institute, Tom Rando of Stanford, and Danica Chen of UC Berkeley, and in 2009 and received overwhelming support from aging research laboratories across the Bay Area as well as sponsorship from the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research. The first meeting took place at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, California in April 2010. This first meeting brought together a few dozen participants; the meetings now attract more than 300 applicants. The purpose of the semiannual BAAM is to stimulate the advancement of aging research, promote its application to human health and to connect scientists throughout the Bay Area to facilitate collaboration. The symposia rotate across host institutions, including Gladstone Institutes/UC San Francisco, Stanford University, UC Berkeley and the Buck Institute. These one-day gatherings consist of oral and poster presentations by graduate students and postdoctoral fellows from universities and institutes in the Bay Area, who are conducting research on the biology of aging and age-related disease. Meetings often feature a keynote lecture from a faculty member and are open to the public. The meeting format is designed to maximize networking among participants.
