Genetic analysis in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has identified conserved endocrine signaling pathways that act during development to regulate entry into a specialized diapause stage, the dauer larva, that allows the animal to survive adverse environmental conditions. Many of the genes involved in dauer formation during development also act in the adult animal to determine lifespan. My research combines the strength of C. elegans as a system for genetic analysis with chemical and biochemical approaches to study the endocrinology of development and lifespan determination, with a focus on lipophilic hormones and other small molecules. Given the conservation of aging pathways between species, it is likely that this approach will identify new therapeutic targets for combating human aging and age-related disease.
