ANIMAL / TRANSGENIC COREBuck Institute for Age Research The Buck Institute Transgenic Core Facility provides timely and cost-effective transgenic and knock-out services for researchers at the Buck Institute and other Institutions/Universities. Services include pronuclear microinjection, blastocyst/morula microinjection, new mouse ES cell line derivation, genotyping, DNA purification, mouse strain rederivation, and cryopreservation of mouse embryos. We offer pronuclear microinjection in several mouse genetic backgrounds including C57BL/6, FVB inbred strains, B6CBAF1, B6C3F1, and B6D2F1 hybrid strains, as well as CD1 outbred strain. We also accommodate larger sized DNA - such as PAC, BAC and YAC DNA. Dr. Lisa Ellerby oversees the operation of the Transgenic Core, and Dr. Junli Zhang serves as director of the transgenic services. The mice are housed in the Buck Institute Vivarium. The Vivarium is an 11,000 square foot centralized rodent barrier that houses specific pathogen free (SPF) mice and rats. The facility is fully accredited by the Association of Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care. Animals throughout the facility are housed in top of the line Techniplast ventilated caging systems and are maintained using husbandry standards outlined in ‘The Guide for the care and Use of Laboratory Animals’. General animal welfare oversight is provided by a veterinarian board certified in Laboratory Animal Medicine. An experienced staff is available to provide technical support for commonly performed procedures. Contact the Vivarium Director, Cary McDonald, for more information 415209-2212.
