The Science The Institute The Science Get Involved Healthy aging

Aging remains one of the most poorly understood processes in biology and is the single most important factor in human disease in developed countries. Our aim is to understand the basic mechanisms of aging by studying the genetic and molecular factors that determine aging rates. We currently use a simple biological system, the microscopic nematode worm, Caenorhabditis elegans.

Current projects within the lab include:

  • Identification of novel aging genes
  • Stress response and aging
  • DNA damage and aging
  • Oxidative stress and aging
  • Role of antioxidants in aging
  • Proteogenomic approaches to aging
  • Hormonal control of aging
  • Screening of compounds that slow aging
  • Testing evolutionary theories of aging
  • Microarray analysis of aging
