Research ThemesGeroscience is an emerging scientific discipline involving the interrelated activities of molecular biologists, neuroscientists, protein chemists, cell biologists, geneticists, endocrinologists, pharmacologists, mathematicians and others who have the common goal of understanding and intervening in age-related disease.
Research at the Buck Institute is broadly organized into three areas of specialization; studies are focused on the aging process itself, the development of age-related diseases and the potential use of stem cells to treat neurodegenerative diseases and arthritis. Scientists are often involved in inquiries that cross over the disciplines; scientists studying the effects of stroke are also exploring the potential use of neural stem cells as a treatment option; studies of DNA and aging also focus on the development of cancer; research on mitochondria, the powerhouses of our cells, has implications for both aging and disease. This loose organizational approach allows scientists to focus on their own areas of specialization and to share their knowledge in a collaborative environment that supports rapid scientific advancements. |
